Football's Green Impact 2026/27
Every away fixture generates carbon. Across 215 clubs in 8 nations, football's away travel footprint adds up to something significant. This page calculates the full CO₂ emissions from football away travel across every league we track — by nation, transport mode, and real-world equivalencies.
CO₂ by Nation — Car Travel Equivalent
Total estimated carbon if all away travel were made by solo car. Based on round-trip distances adjusted +30% for road routing.
Transport Mode Comparison — Total Emissions
The same journeys by different modes. Train and coach cut emissions dramatically. Flying would multiply them.

How much CO₂ could be saved globally if all away travel switched from car to an alternative?
📐 How We Calculate This
Distance
Straight-line (crow-flies) haversine distances between stadiums. Multiplied by 2 for round trips and by 1.3 to approximate real road/rail routing (crow-flies distances are typically 20–35% shorter than actual routes).
Emission Factors
Per-passenger kg CO₂e per km, aligned with DEFRA methodology:
- 🚗 Car (solo): 0.170 kg/km
- 🚌 Coach: 0.027 kg/km
- 🚆 Train: 0.035 kg/km
- ✈️ Flight: 0.255 kg/km
What's Counted
League fixtures only — no cup games, play-offs or European nights. One trip per away fixture per club. Distances represent one fan travelling from the home ground to the away ground.
Limitations
These are estimates. Real emissions vary by vehicle occupancy, train type, route and fuel mix. Car figures assume a solo driver — car-sharing cuts these significantly. We use crow-flies × 1.3 as a consistent approximation, not actual route distances.
Football's Carbon Footprint — The Bigger Picture
Away travel is one of football's most visible but least-discussed environmental costs. While clubs invest in solar panels and sustainability reports, the millions of miles covered by away fixtures every season generate a substantial and largely invisible carbon footprint.
The most significant lever for change is transport mode. Switching all away travel from solo car to train cuts emissions by roughly 79%. Coach travel offers similar savings at 84%. Geography plays a role too — leagues with more dispersed clubs generate higher per-fixture emissions, while compact leagues (like the Eredivisie in the Netherlands) have a naturally lower footprint.
These figures cover the 2026/27 season across 8 nations and 215 clubs. All distances are straight-line (crow-flies) and represent one fan per fixture travelling from home ground to away ground and back. Full methodology →
